About IPF

The Illinois Press Foundation is the nonprofit, charitable arm of the Illinois Press Association.

The Foundation’s mission is to promote and protect free expression through educational activities that foster the practice and respect of First Amendment principles and values, to enhance the quality of services provided by newspapers to their communities, and to support reading and literacy efforts.

The Foundation accomplishes this mission through:

  • Capitol News Illinois, a news service operated by the Foundation that provides state government coverage to daily and weekly newspapers throughout the state.
  • Annual scholarships awarded to three students in the Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois Springfield.
  • Grants to help public and private high school journalism programs buy hardware and software for use in student publications.
  • An annual, 11-day residential workshop that educates students about the journalism profession, including approaches by modern, digital newsrooms.
  • Hosting the annual Illinois Journalism Education Association’s annual luncheon, which honors the All-State Journalism Team and the Illinois Journalist of the Year.
  • Funding to support the mentoring of Illinois high school journalists.
  • Working with the Rural Health News Service to provide free health care articles to Illinois newspapers.
  • In 2019, the Foundation plans to expand its continuing education opportunities to working professional journalists through webinars and other processes.

Director Jeff Rogers and a 22-member Board of Directors and its committees lead the Foundation. Donations from individuals and Illinois newspapers and news groups fund the Foundation.
